ABOUT THE MEMORIAL TOWER

Overview

In May 1952, at the regular general meeting of the National League of War-Damaged Cities (established in 1947), which is made up of 113 cities designated by the government as cities participating in war-damage reconstruction projects, a resolution was passed to erect a tower to commemorate the victims of air raids in war-damaged cities across the country, and it was decided that the tower should be erected in Himeji City.
The design for the memorial tower was submitted nationwide, and the design by Ryutaro Takaya of Tokyo was selected. Construction began in Tegarayama Central Park and was completed on October 26, 1956. Renovation work was also carried out on the memorial tower from June to August 2006, restoring it to its original beautiful appearance.

Association of Memorial Service

In May 1952, the Pacific War National Air Raid Victims Memorial Association was established with the membership of 113 cities across the country, and its secretariat was located in Himeji City.
The Memorial Association was subsequently reorganized in August 1982 to become the Pacific War National Air-Raid Victim Consoling Association (As of December 2006, due to mergers, the number of member cities of the Memorial Association has increased to 107).
On April 1, 2013, we transitioned to a general incorporated foundation.

Peace Memorial Ceremony

The Memorial Association has designated October 26th, the day the memorial tower was completed, as the date of the ceremony, and every year in front of the memorial tower, it holds the "Pacific War National Air Raid Victims Memorial Peace Ceremony," attended by many people, including bereaved families from all over the country, to commemorate the victims of air raids across the country and pray for lasting peace in the world.
